NATIONAL IDENTIFICATION SYSTEM (NIS):
A TOOL FOR POVERTY REDUCTION
The achievement of government’s mission of democracy, good governance and sustainable development is dependent on the availability of detailed demographic information. This can facilitate the equitable distribution of resources and public services on the basis of need. Forms of information that the NIS provide to enable government achieve this mission include:
- Data on location and characteristics of different groups of persons for an efficient growth distribution process;
- Personal information such as gender, age data, occupation etc
- Decentralised information for local authorities covering the different groups of people that they serve;
- Population data combined with geographic information to ease identification and targeting
- Use of ID card to ease access to services especially by different categories of people, such as persons with disabilities, as their identity can easily be verified.
- Data to facilitate resource allocation and support groups/cooperatives in production ventures
- Data that facilitates leveraging on existing community facilities and other resources to improve education, health, etc.
